Intellectual Property - Strategic Protection for Innovation
Intellectual property (IP) serves as a strategic resource that protects ventures from imitation and secures competitive advantage. Different IP types—patents, copyrights, and trademarks—represent distinct protection mechanisms with varying strategic implications. Research involving 825 ventures found that patents alone are insufficient for growth; IP must be complemented by human and financial capital. Four distinct pathways to growth were identified, each representing a unique resource portfolio combining different IP types with various combinations of versatile resources. Entrepreneurs should develop comprehensive IP strategies that consider their business model, industry context, and resource capabilities.
